Kabbalat Shabbat - Friday Night ServicesMasorti Friday night services are typically hosted in members' homes and we typically have between 20-40 people. Sometimes we're scrunched in, but the upside is that we fill up the room with inspiring singing and communal warmth. If you come from a traditional / Orthodox background, you will find that the service is familiar and traditional. In addition, we are highly inclusive so you'll find all genders sitting together and taking leadership roles in the service. We pride ourselves on being a learning community, so don't be surprised if you turn up and see someone leading a portion of the service for the very first time. We value being inter-generational, so you may see a young person leading a discussion for the adults, or an 85 year old playing chess with an 11 year old. Kids of all ages come (sometimes in pyjamas) and are encouraged to stay in the service. We frequently have a babysitter on hand to supervise if they are tired of services and need to go and play.
Following services we have a Kosher (Kashruth policy forthcoming!) vegetarian bring-to-share Friday night communal dinner together and typically have a learning activity or discussion following. |
Some Friday nights we are hosted by Sinai Synagogue as a parallel service in an effort to have opportunities to build relationships and connections across denominations. We organise these Friday nights to co-inside with Sinai's monthly Havurah suppers. Registration for the suppers separately.
Dates: 2018: 12th January, 2nd February (at Sinai), 16th March, 20th April, 18th May, 1st June (at Sinai). Volunteer Needs: Please help us make Friday nights participatory and share the joy of making it happen. Use this volunteer sign up link to offer to host, lead Kabbalat Shabbat, lead Ma’ariv, lead learning or sign your kids up to lead a portion of the services, an activity or learning. |
Shabbat Morning ServicesJoin the Leeds Masorti community for a full Shabbat morning services. The services are traditional and also all genders sit together and work together to create the service. Encounter the traditional liturgy and tunes along with an inclusive, open-minded environment where all Jewish adults count in the minyan.
Our community encourages life-long learning and bringing everyone in to create a participatory and meaningful shabbat service and community.Typically you'll find someone leading a portion of the service for the very first time in his/her life or leying (chanting torah) along side people who hae been doing these things for many years. We typically have an oneg and some learning/discussion led by a member or a visiting Rabbi or scholar. We purposefully involve youth of all ages in the main service, with the spirit of being intergenerational. We encourage youth to take part, teach all of us and build relationships with members of all ages. We also plan activities for young poeple that are member-led and multi-age. Each Shabbat morning features a different youth activity. (More info to be posted on that shortly). |
We meet for Shabbat Morning at the MAZCC every six weeks. [all dates are on the calendar].
Upcoming Dates:
Volunteer Needs: Leading da’vening, leyning, aliot, D’var toray/discussion leader, multi-age youth activity (torah-drama/ singing z'mirot/ ideas welcome) someone to line up all of the above. As we grow in volunteer numbers, we can have Shabbat morning services more frequently. Sign up for all on this spreadsheet. |
